Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is an agency that comes under the U.S. Department of Transportation. The FAA is responsible for making regulations for civil aviation to ensure maximum safety. Out of many regulations, part 135 is one of them.
What is Part 135?
For companies providing air charter services to make profits, they are required to obtain a part 135 certification from the FAA. Part 135 pilot requirements certificate is not meant for a regularly scheduled flight. Rather, they are used for commercial, non-scheduled private air charters, and air taxis.
After obtaining the certificate from the FAA, those operators become eligible to offer their services to the end users directly. In some cases, a broker can do the legal paperwork on behalf of the end user. But, in the end, it’s the operator that provides the services.
What Is Included in the Part 135 Certificate?
The part 135 pilot requirements have a predefined set of rules and regulations that an operator must fulfill before providing its services. Following regulations are made in part 135.
- As the operator will provide commercial flight services, the part 135 certificate demands more strict training.
- It also demands the operator to have an entire team of management staff to keep an eye on the aspects of the operator.
- Furthermore, it demands the operator to have a Chief pilot, operation, and maintenance manager.
- Operators wishing to obtain a part 135 certificate must have a flight monitoring system. The goal is to track every aircraft for better security of passengers and smooth operation of the aircraft.
- It demands to provide ten hours of perpetual rest to every pilot.
Types of Part 135 Operators
Besides the regulations in the part 135 pilot requirements list, the FAA has divided part 135 into four types. Under which type the operator falls makes a significant impact.
- Single Pilot
If the operator is a single-pilot operator, they are limited to using only a single pilot for all aircraft operations.
- Single Pilot In Command (PIC)
A PIC operator can have only a single pilot in command and a maximum of three Second In Command (SIC) pilots. No pilot other than those is allowed to take part in aircraft operations.
These operators have limitations on the scope of operations. For instance, the aircraft should be of nine passengers or fewer.
These operators have no such limitations. These operators are also required to provide training and must have management positions.
